On a
personal note, the last couple of weeks have been weeks of testing. My son-in-law had an attack of guillain-barre
syndrome and has been in the hospital.
Needless to say, our normal schedules have been very abnormal and rest
at a premium. The worst is behind us,
but there is quite a road of rehabilitation ahead. We would appreciate your prayers on his
behalf. Already, God has shown up in
some amazing ways. We know He is in
control and only allowing what He is going to work for good to His glory in
this whole process. My daughter and
son-in-law are selfless servants of God and the support from the body of
believers has been overwhelmingly supportive and loving. We thank God for His amazing love as shown
through His servants.
I finally
have a few minutes to call my own, so I wanted to spend a few more moments in
Proverbs with you.
Proverbs 7:1–4 “My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments
with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine
eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.”
Yes, the words are addressed from
father to son, but the application is just as valid when saying father to
daughter. Through Solomon’s words to his
son, Father God is impressing upon us the importance of hiding His word in our
heart. I am so thankful for the many
memory verses I learned as a child. I
have also found that the more I go through the scripture and continue with my verse-by-verse
studies that many verses become a part of me through the natural repetition
that results from that study. God’s law
should be as dear to us as the “apple of our eye,” a reference to the pupil of
the eye and a figurative phrase that speaks of something we cherish above all
else. It is often only through the
ministry of the word of God through the Holy Spirit that we can find the needed
strength to withstand temptation and make choices that are wise rather than
foolish. That ministry is so much more
timely and effective when we have a storage vault of verses for Him to use to
speak to us.
God says that if we will keep His
commandments, we will live—not just in this lifetime, but beyond it. The Hebrew for “live” makes reference to
restoring to life and making one whole, to preserving life. When man sinned, the consequence was
death—not only physical, but spiritual death.
God’s word gives us the words of life.
Deuteronomy 8:3; Psalms 119:17 “And he humbled thee, and suffered
thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did
thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread
only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man
live.”
Luke 4:4 “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”
Jesus was the embodiment of the word
of God. In Him are the fulfillment of
the law and the provision of our salvation.
In Him we find spiritual nourishment.
Through Him we can once again be declared righteous before God.
Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the
prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
John 3:16–17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.”
John 6:35, 48 “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life:
he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never
thirst.”
2 Corinthians 5:19–21 “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling
the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath
committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for
Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be
ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
If you do not know Jesus as your
Savior, I pray you will humble yourself before Him, repent of your sin and
accept His precious gift of salvation.
Time is short; you are not guaranteed tomorrow.
Proverbs 27:1 “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest
not what a day may bring forth.”
James 4:14 “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For
what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and
then vanisheth away.”
