The Prophecy Puzzle

Connecting Psalm 83, Destruction of Damascus, Ezekiel 38-39, the 6th Seal and Armageddon

Just a reminder…….this blogis a compilation of posts that build on the information shared in previousposts. So, if this is your first visit,you may want to check out previous postings regarding this subject or check outthe personal verse-by-verse commentaries posted on my website regarding thesubject passages (Psalm 83, Isaiah 17, Ezekiel 38-39, Revelation 6 &Revelation 19).

As I was spending time yet once again in the subjectpassage in Ezekiel regarding the war most popularly known as Gog/Magog andthinking about its timing in relation to end times events, a flash ofunderstanding hit me that fit the prophetic puzzle pieces together more clearlyyet again. I get so excited when I feellike the Lord is revealing things to me, and I can’t wait to get it recordedand share it. Most of my researchindicates that end times scholars usually fall into one of two camps regardingthe timing of this war—before the tribulation and as part of Armageddon. I now believe that the scripture makesapplication to both, much like the prophecy in Isaiah 61 that Jesus read in thesynagogue in Nazareth.

Isaiah61:1–2 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD isupon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto themeek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to thecaptives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim theacceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; tocomfort all that mourn….”

Jesus declared Himself the fulfillment of the firstportion of that prophecy (highlighted in bold), but stopped His reading at acomma preceding “the day of vengeance,” the reference to His return atArmageddon. That comma has representedalmost 2,000 years at this point in time.

Circumstances are changing quickly in the MiddleEast. More radical groups are gainingcontrol or making power plays in the nations of that area as the people rebelagainst their dictatorial leaders.

I still think it likely that this will culminate ina war between Israel and her neighbors as described in Psalm 83 that willresult in the destruction of Damascus when Israel retaliates as they havedeclared they would. When Israel isvictorious, it will set the stage for the attack by Gog’s coalition. It also explains why these nations are notmentioned as part of that coalition.

The members of the Gog coalition will have their ownmotives for joining together for this attack. Russia has vested interests in those nations, especially in Syria andLebanon, that will be jeopardized by Israel’s victory. The recent discovery of a great gas field offthe coast of Israel will serve as another incentive, not to mention gainingcontrol of other valuable assets in Israel. Turkey is one of Gog’s primary allies, and they will be very angry tosee their desire to reestablish an Islamic Caliphate over that region disappear. The leaders of Iran, Gog’s other primaryally, are focused on bringing about conditions that will result in the returnof their Mahdi.

Though men are the instruments, God is very clear indeclaring through Ezekiel that He is the One who goads Gog into attacking. It seems to be His intervention on Israel’sbehalf that prepares the hearts of the 144,000 Jews who will be set apart asGod’s witnesses among the nations when the believers are raptured. Gog’s defeat will cause many to acknowledgeAlmighty God as the God of Israel (38:16 & 39:7).

The prophet goes on to declare that when Gog attacksIsrael, God’s “fury shall come up in my face.” His response will be to cause a great “shaking” (earthquake, bombs,both?) in the land of Israel. Events willprovoke great fear among all creatures and men on the earth. Mountains will be thrown down, high placestumbled, and walls destroyed. Gog’s armywill be so crazed with fear that they turn on one another.

Along with the great shaking, God will sendpestilence with blood and a powerful storm raining down great hailstones, fireand brimstone (nuclear aftermath?).

In chapter 39 we are told that God is giving thedead carcasses to the carnivorous beasts and birds to devour. This, in fact, clouded my understanding as Itried to equate this declaration with that of verse 17.

The prophet then goes on to add that not only willGog’s armies experience His judgment, so too will the land of Magog(Russia/Turkey) and those dwelling carelessly in the “isles” (Hebrew = habitalareas, coasts, countries, islands); in other words, other places on earth thataren’t part of his army. Conclusion, theeffects of this war are far reaching.

Next, we are given a detailed method that will beused to cleanse the land and dispose of the dead bodies that seems to mirrorthe guidelines that would apply to a nuclear aftermath. This cleanup will take seven months. Ezekielalso makes a point of telling us that the weapons of her enemies will be usedas fuel by Israel for 7 years.

These are some of the primary reasons that I believeGog’s attack will occur prior to the 70^th week of Daniel we know asthe tribulation. When Jesus returns toestablish His kingdom, the focus is on the forces of Antichrist positionedagainst the believing remnant in Bozrah (Petra?) and against Jerusalem inMegiddo. I do not believe Jesus wouldrequire such a long or careful cleanup period, nor would Israel need to bedependent on weapons for fuel during His Kingdom.

Now, go with me to the opening of the 6^thseal in Revelation 6. It was the phrase“my fury shall come up in my face” that made me connect to the reference to thecoming of God’s wrath as referenced in 6:17. Then I started to make other connections. The 6^th seal judgment includes agreat earthquake (shaking), the sun turns black and the moon turns red, stars falland the heavens roll together like a scroll (nuclear?). Every mountain and island move out ofplace. Men call out for death in theirfear; they recognize these events as “the wrath of the Lamb.” Though described a bit differently, thesejudgments mesh well with Ezekiel’s record of God’s judgment against Gog’s army.

This would certainly set the stage for the rise ofthe Antichrist as the world’s Savior and establish conditions that wouldfacilitate the signing of a 7-year covenant with Israel. Yes, I believe that the first five seals areopen and represent the birth pains described in Matthew 24. (See the commentary on Revelation 4-7 on mywebsite for an explanation. My understandingof those chapters changed once I took off self-imposed blinders. I’m still trying to put more of the detailsinto place, but when I feel I’ve been given new understanding, I can’t wait toshare it. Some of that commentary aswell as that of Ezekiel 38-39 will have to be revised as soon as possible.)

Now, back to Ezekiel 39. As I came to verse 17, I realized that thiscould be another one of those prophetic time jumps (a la Isaiah 61 referencedat the beginning of this post)—this time to Armageddon and the secondcoming.

God declares at this point that He is preparing a greatsacrifice for the carnivorous birds and beasts in Israel. Revelation 19:17-18 is a mirrorpassage—though not as detailed. Theprophet declares that this sacrifice is followed by God “setting His gloryamong the heathen.” I believe this is a reference to establishing Jesus on Histhrone.

Verse 22 of Ezekiel 39 helped affirm this revelation in mymind. Ezekiel states that “the house ofIsrael shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.” That statement was always one of those puzzlepieces that didn’t quite fit in connection with Gog’s attack. It fits perfectly, however, with Armageddonand the return of Jesus as King.

Not only will Israel recognize their Messiah, itseems that the Gentile nations will finally understand the truth of the propheciesof scripture.

It is then that God will complete what was startedin 1948 with the reestablishment of Israel as a nation. ALL the Jews will be brought home to Israelto fulfill God’s covenant with Abraham. God will pour out His Spirit on the house of Israel as part of the NewCovenant as foretold by both Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and Jesus will reign as Kingin fulfillment of God’s covenant with David.

This flows in beautifully with Ezekiel’s record thatfollows regarding the building of the millennial temple and reapportionment ofthe land among the tribes of Israel within the Promised Land.

The 10 Most Important Chapters in the Bible

I hope all of you arehaving a good start to this new year and that studying the scriptures andlearning more about the Savior and how to live to glorify Him were included onyour list of new year resolutions. Mylife is still in a state that doesn’t allow consistent time for working on theblog, but I am still praying for all that find their way here and praying thatyou will find information that is helpful in your study ofscriptures—especially as it pertains to the study of prophecy. I hope you are also taking this time to go to my website and utilize the resources provided there.

As I was lying in my bedlast night listening to J. Vernon McGee, he made reference to the many lists hehad seen that identified the most important chapters in scripture. Personally, I’ve never seen such a list, butI couldn’t help but immediately starting to compile one in my head; andI thought I would share my thoughts with you.

Genesis 1 – Tells us how weand our world came into being.

Genesis 17 – EstablishesGod’s eternal, unconditional covenant with Abraham and his descendants through Isaac,a son birthed by Sarah.

Exodus 20 – Gives us the 10Commandments, the foundation code of morals.

Isaiah 53 – The primaryprophecy of God’s plan of redemption through the crucifixion of the Messiah.

Daniel 9 – The primaryprophecy given to Daniel that is the key to understanding end times prophecy.

Matthew 24 – Most detailedaccount of Jesus’ teaching regarding the future and the signs that wouldprecede His return to establish His Kingdom on earth.

John 3 – The way to eternallife as explained by Jesus, the Savior, “the only begotten Son of God.”

Romans 8 – A chapter that, Ithink, best summarizes solid theology and provides so much hope and comfort tothe child of God.

1Corinthians 15 –Identifies the gospel in a nutshell, establishes the importance of theresurrection of Jesus, and introduces the truth of the teaching known as therapture.

Revelation 19 – The prophecythat details the return of the Lord Jesus as King of kings and Lord of Lords.

LET YOUR WALK MATCH YOUR TALK

This post will completeour investigation of Paul’s letter to the Colossians. I know that if we will embrace its treasuretrove of truth, we will become more spiritually discerning in identifying the proliferationof false teachings in these end times.

Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

In this versePaul is basically encouraging the Colossians to have a good testimony beforethe unbelieving world—those outside the family of faith. Your life needs to back up the message youare sharing to be most effective.

1 Corinthians 9:14 “Even so hath theLord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.”

Philippians 1:27 “Only let yourconduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ….”

Redeemingtime is a reference to making the most of every opportunity (as stated inseveral other translations), and I would add learning to recognize thoseopportunities as well.

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech bealway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answerevery man.

Christiansare to be prepared to answer why webelieve what we believe.

1Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in yourhearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you areason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

I think the words fromPeter complement the words of Paul. Ourspeech should always be gracious—but especially when sharing the gospel and thetruth of God’s word. Again, the word forgrace references a divine influenceupon the heart, which I relate to being yielded to the Holy Spirit. We aren’t to try to beat people over the headwith the truth or present it in an offensive manner. I think, however, that the desire not tooffend should not prevent our sharing the truth. Some people will claim offense no matter how“gracefully” we try to share it. Ourduty is to obey God rather than follow the dictates of the culture. He tells us to share the gospel witheveryone.

Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Goye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

The Greek for the word salt gave reference to prudence, which Webster defines as“wisdom in the way of caution, discretion and carefulness.” I think this includes Peter’s admonition tospeak with meekness and fear (before the Lord). When salt is added to food it enhances the flavor. When we season our speech with salt we arespeaking so as to make the message more effective—not less.

When looking for extrainsight, I came across a good quote from the web at http://www.saltinstitute.org/pubstat/malott.html, from an article written circa 1970 by H.R.Malott,  Chief Field Representative,  Salt Institute: “I like to think that seasoning with salt means the saltof truth and that knowing how ye ought to answer every man is answeringtruthfully. My father taught me that if I did not tell a lie I did nothave to remember what I had said.”

Paul goes on to close his letter with personal greetings and messages.

GOD DELIGHTS IN OUR PRAYERS

Continuing inour investigation of Paul’s letter to the Colossians…

Colossians 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

The firstthing I notice is that the Colossians evidently have a reputation of being apraying people since Paul is encouraging them to “continue” in prayer. The Greek for continue made it clear that prayer is worth the effort and energydevoted to it; it also requires a heart commitment (to be earnest). The Greek for watch is a reference to awareness and vigilance, a desire to discover and avoid danger. In other words, it shouldn’t be a time ofrote repetition. Your heart and mindshould be involved, and your words should have purpose.

Our time ofprayer should always include expressions of thanksgiving. This is an area in which I have grown throughthe years. When you talk about prayer,most people think about asking God for things. Prayer is a time of fellowship with the Lord. As a loving Father, He definitely wants tohear our burdens and requests, but He also wants to hear words of love,appreciation and thanksgiving for the many blessings He gives us as well as forthe amazing love and forgiveness which He so freely and unceasingly givesus.

Colossians 4:3-4 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door ofutterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That Imay make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

Paul does nothesitate to request prayer for himself and those ministering to and withhim. Scripture is full of references tothe Lord hearing and responding to the prayers of His people. There are many scriptures that encourage usto pray and let us know that our prayers delight the Lord.

Proverbs 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is anabomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Proverbs 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked:but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shallask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

James 5:16 ….The effectual fervent prayer of arighteous man availeth much.

Paul’s desire was to beable to continue sharing the gospel with the Gentiles, the very thing that hadled to his imprisonment at the time of writing this letter. Paul had already defined this “mystery” inchapter 1 as the truth that salvation was meant for Gentiles as well asJews. He is also asking for prayer toshare the message clearly and in the right way. It’s interesting to me that although he was very well spoken, Pauldidn’t depend on natural abilities in sharing the gospel message, he wantedsupernatural provision and empowerment.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHRISTIAN MASTERS/BOSSES

This chaptercontinues seamlessly in context with the previous chapter. This verse is very similar to a verse fromEphesians quoted in the last chapter.

Colossians 4:1 Masters, give unto yourservants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master inheaven.

Ephesians 6:9 And, ye masters, do thesame things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is thererespect of persons with him.

I have tokeep reminding myself that Paul is addressing these letters to Christians. My first thought is that what he is saying isa “no brainer.” Then all I have to do isremember my own personal failures, and I realize that we all have a continualstruggle with the sin nature and need encouragement and reminders to do what isright. He is giving Christian “masters”instruction to treat their servants with justice (according to what is rightmorally and ethically) and equality (without respect to persons, neither inferiornor superior to each other). The primemotivation—You have a Master in heaven and are servants to Him. There is no doubt that He deals with Hisservants justly and without respect to persons. Your treatment of those under your authority falls under thedisciplining authority of your Master—the Lord Jesus.

I think thatalthough the context is referencing servant/slave-master relationships, it isobvious that the principles are directly applicable to employee-employerrelationships as well. As a Christianemployee or employer our primary concern should be focused on how our actionsreflect on our Savior.

THE CHRISTIAN SERVANT

Paul isdirecting his words in this section of his letter to Christian servants. He reminds the believer that his service isto be done “as unto the Lord.”

Colossians 3:22 Servants, obey in all things yourmasters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but insingleness of heart, fearing God:

The Greek forservants is a reference to someonewho is a slave, whether willingly or unwillingly. In the whole of biblical times, slavery was apart of society. I can find nowhere inscripture that prohibits the practice. There are verses in Deuteronomy and Jeremiah, however, that indicatethat the Lord would that all men be free.

Deuteronomy 23:15–16 “Thou shalt notdeliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee:He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choosein one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him.”

Jeremiah34:13-16 Thus saiththe LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the daythat I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house ofbondmen, saying, At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother anHebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years,thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me,neither inclined their ear. And ye were now turned, and had done right in mysight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made acovenant before me in the house which is called by my name: But ye turned andpolluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid,whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them intosubjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.

There are,however, many guidelines as to proper treatment of slaves. Paul gives a clear statement regarding thetreatment of slaves in his letter to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:5-9 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according tothe flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as untoChrist; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but asthe servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good willdoing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever goodthing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bondor free. And, ye masters, do thesame things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is thererespect of persons with him.

Having saidall that, Paul is instructing Christians who are slaves. He is clear that they are to be obedient totheir masters in every way—whether they are being watched or not. They are to serve their masters with the heartthat they are serving God in the process. Verse 8 from Ephesians (above) gives the best motivation. You can’t outgive the Lord. The Lord will reward you for your goodservice (the implication being even if your master doesn’t).

Colossians 3:23-24 And whatsoever ye do, do itheartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shallreceive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Verse 23begins with a repeat of the instruction in verse 17. I think the key truth that keeps jumping outin this chapter is that we are to live “as to the Lord.” I am sure that a slave would especially needthese words of encouragement—especially if serving a hard master. He/she would need to be focused on the factthat the Lord looks at his/her service to their master as though they areserving Him. Again, their work will notgo unrewarded; they have a heavenly inheritance awaiting them.

Our cultureis so full of pleasing self and earning the accolades of people. As Christians, the only One we should worryabout pleasing is the Lord. Why? Because we are joint-heirs with Christ, andour eternal inheritance will far surpass any earthly treasure or accolades wemay accumulate. We serve the “LordChrist,” the Messiah, the Savior, THE Supreme Authority.

Colossians 3:25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hathdone: and there is no respect of persons.

In context,this statement seems connected to the instruction to “servants.” God will not let those who claim His name gounpunished for wrongdoing. There is novalid excuse before the Lord for doing wrong. Scripture is clear that you will reap what you sow.

Job 4:8 Even as I have seen, they that plowiniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked:for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

The Lord is arighteous judge; He is no respecter of persons.

2Chronicles 19:7Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for thereis no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking ofgifts.

Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, andsaid, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Romans 2:11 For there is no respect of personswith God.

1Peter 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, whowithout respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the timeof your sojourning here in fear:

Though in contextthis instruction is to servants, it is applicable to every believer.

SUBMITTING TO GOD’S AUTHORITY IN THE HOME

In this blogpost we come to the section of verses in Colossians in which Paul shares God’swill for the Christian concerning the structure of authority in thefamily. It is a concept that onlyChristian families can truly understand and more willingly embrace when each memberof the family understands God’s heart and submits as unto Him.

Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit inthe Lord.

Our cultureand society has certainly made this directive distasteful to most womentoday. Submission is understood asweakness and as designating inferiority. That is not God’s intention. Wemust always remember that every command and instruction that God has given usis for our good. Because in general menhave rebelled from their responsibilities before God and women have assertedtheir “equality” in every area, this aspect of God’s ordained structure for thefamily has basically been ignored—the implication being that we know betterthan God what is good for us. The thingto remember is that Paul is writing to believers, those who should be embracingGod’s will for their lives. I can’t helpbut be curious as to why this verse was inspired to precede the followingverse. It is much easier for wives tounderstand and accept submission in light of God’s command to thehusbands. The sobering truth is thatthis distinction is a result of the curse for sin.

Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow andthy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shallbe to thy husband, and he shall ruleover thee.

It’s not therelationship God established with the creation; it’s a relationship that becamenecessary because of our rebellion. Themost important motivation for every Christian wife is to remember that we aresubmitting to the Lord in submitting to our husbands. I liked a quote from Warren Wiersbe I foundin David Guzik’s commentary: “The idea of submissiondoesn't have anything to do with someone being smarter or better or more talented.It has to do with a God-appointed order. "Anyone who has served in thearmed forces knows that 'rank' has to do with order and authority, not withvalue or ability."

Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love yourwives, and be not bitter against them.

In my opinion,husbands are given the much harder command. They are to love their wives unconditionally and not act bitterly towardthem. According to Webster, to actbitterly is to cause physical pain or to cause pain or distress to themind. He also defines it as actions thatare severe, cruel, harsh, or stern. Asyou can see, this directive applies to both “words and deeds” as referenced inverse 17. When a Christian husband isobedient to this instruction from the Lord, it will not be hard for the wife tobe submissive. His actions willdemonstrate that he is always watching out for her well being because he isbeing submissive to the Lord.

This bringsup another important point in my thinking regarding being sure that you do notget unequally yoked to an unbeliever. Ifa Christian woman puts herself in that position, she is just asking fortrouble. 1Peter makes it clear that youare to be submissive to the unbelieving husband in hopes of winning him tofaith by your example.

1Peter 3:1-2 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to yourown husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word bewon by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chasteconversation coupled with fear.

Colossians 3:20 Children, obey yourparents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

Paul nowdirects his instruction to the children. In each case—wife, husband, child—I think Paul is singling out the mostimportant instruction for each for creating a happy home that honors the Lord. The hardest thing for a child to do isobey. The instruction is that they obeyall of the time—not just part of the time. Again, if their parents are themselves submissive and obedient to theLord, an environment is created that makes this instruction easier to follow;it does not, however, ensure compliance. Until a child comes to saving faith and in possession of the HolySpirit, he most naturally follows the desires of his flesh. He has to be taught what is good andright. He has to be taught about theLord and the things that please the Lord. I would assume that Paul is directing his comments to children that haveproclaimed their faith in Jesus and have a desire to please Him, since that isthe motivation that he attaches to the directive.

Colossians 3:21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

It’sinteresting to note that the next directive is to Fathers—not mothers orparents. As the established authority inthe home, the Father is held accountable for the disciplinary structure in thehome. It doesn’t mean that he worksindependently of the mother; in fact, a wise father work hand-in-hand with his“helpmeet” to ensure the proper environment and in establishing thedisciplinary guidelines for the family. Themother is always the designated authority over the child in the absence of theFather, and the children must understand that she has his full support. It’s easy for one in authority to abuse thatauthority—especially in a parent-child relationship. The father is wise that guides his childrenwith a firm, but loving hand. He isclear in his expectations and in the consequences for not adhering to thoseexpectations. Children may not like it,but they understand and appreciate consistent, protective parameters. Fathers who aren’t consistent in theiractions and are unclear in making their expectations understood only provokeanger in their children with their responses. They will get discouraged because they will never be sure of how toplease you.

If we wantour children to grow in spiritual maturity and learn to be submissive andobedient to the Lord, we need to ensure that they see fathers and mothers whoare submissive and obedient to the Lord.

SHARING GOD’S TRUTH THROUGH MUSIC

Continuing our investigation of Colossians...

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Paul nowencourages the Colossian believers to have their hearts and minds saturatedwith the word of Christ, the scriptures. They were not just to mindlessly memorize it; they were to learn it andapply its truth to how they lived; that is wisdom. They weren’t to treat what they learned astheir private treasure. They were toshare it with one another through teaching. They were to use it to gently remind one another of its truths andadvise caution and warning when necessary.

One of thebest ways to give these reminders is through spiritual songs. When the truth of scripture is put to music,it’s more easily remembered and brought to mind when we need comfort or arefaced with times of testing or temptation. That is one reason I love our music director (Clay Hecocks) so much; heuses a lot of music that is basically scripture set to music. This kind of music is an expression ofgratitude and joy resulting from the ministry of the Holy Spirit to ourhearts. It accomplishes two things atone time--we praise the Lord and guard our hearts through the same process.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and theFather by him.

Paul isbasically saying that any action we take and any word we say should be done inthe name of the Lord Jesus—in recognition that we have declared Jesus Lord inour lives and that everything we do and say either honors or dishonors Him. A heart of love, devotion and gratitude isthe only acceptable response for the sacrifice He made for us and the blessingsHe has given us.

Even as Iwrite these words, I am convicted. Ourlives should reflect that we understand that the Lord is always present with us in theperson of the Holy Spirit. This truth isone that we change us radically if we fully embraced it. On my good days, Iconverse readily with Him about how I am choosing to invest my time throughoutthe day. On my bad days, I recognize(often in retrospect) that I chose not to maintain that ongoing conversationwith Him throughout the day. Sometimes Ieven find myself rationalizing poor choices to Him as I make them. That is one of the main reasons I look so forward to His coming. I will finally be freed from the sin natureand will be able to follow the dictates of a pure heart that is totallysubmitted to His will without temptation to do otherwise.

We shouldalso be ever mindful of the fact that everything that is provided for usthrough the Son is according to the will of the Father and through theempowerment of the Spirit. This amazingtruth should be cause for great thanksgiving on our part. Again, I think this verse is acknowledgingthe Trinity. God is a reference to theHoly Spirit, since scripture is clear that “God is a spirit.” (John 4:24) The wording “and” the Father gives provides further distinction.

THINKING ABOUT THE ECONOMY

I was listening to Chuck Missler last night and he used an analogy that I thought was worth sharing. Most of us don't really have a clue regarding the state of our economy and the national debt. This information revealed a very sobering picture.

1 million seconds = 12 days
1 billion seconds = 32 years
1 trillion seconds = 32,000 years

Just thought this information was worth sharing.

Makes this promise speak more loudly to my heart...Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

ACTING WITH THE LOVE OF GOD GIVES THE PEACE OF GOD

A signatureof the Apostle Paul’s writings is that he includes a blessing for the grace andpeace of God. The Greek for the wordgrace declares it to be a divine influence on the heart that is reflected inone’s life. The grace of God alwaysinfluences His children to act in the love of God toward others. Acting in the love of God toward others is areflection of our acceptance of His Lordship and positions us to experience Hispeace. He emphasizes this truth in thefollowing verses from his letter to the Colossians.

Colossians 3:14 And above all these thingsput on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

I couldn’thelp but think of my ongoing study in 1Corinthians with this verse. In chapters 12-14 Paul is teaching on thegiftings of the Spirit, their purpose and proper use. The believers were eager to possess thesemiraculous abilities, but Paul very emphatically establishes that unconditionallove for the brethren is the possession we should most desire. As with spiritual gifts of the Spirit, thecharacter traits discussed in the previous post are important and to bedesired; but again Paul emphasizes that unconditional love of the brethren isthe most valuable trait of all. Thistype of love is what allows one to most effectively utilize his/her gifts and pleaseGod in the process and is the heart foundation from which the traits listedabove can most easily flow. This type oflove is the uniting factor for these traits in the believer to produce moralexcellence as well as the uniting factor in the body of Christ to bring us tomaturity and completeness so that we lack nothing. When we are acting with unconditional love,the church as a whole benefits, because the Spirit has provided for our everyneed through His working in the life of every individual that makes up thewhole.

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which alsoye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

The peace ofGod is a result of our hearts being “at one” with Him again, our fellowshipwith Him has been restored. Through thatrestoration we can now benefit from His provision for us through the HolySpirit. With the empowerment of the HolySpirit we can now control our thoughts and feelings toward one another. That empowerment will always lead us tothoughts and actions that are in line with God’s thoughts and actions. Christ is the head of the body (the church),and the body should always act in accordance to the directions from theHead. When we yield to the working ofthe Spirit in our lives, we are allowing the peace of God to rule in ourhearts.

Isaiah tellsus that those who are called by His name have been created for His glory.

Isaiah 43:7 “Even every one that iscalled by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea,I have made him.”

Isaiah wasspeaking to the Israelites, but the truth is just as applicable to thechurch. Just as Israel, we areprivileged to have been chosen to be identified with His name. When we fulfill that purpose, we have greatcause to give thanks. Not only does itglorify God, it benefits us individually and as a body.

TRAITS THAT SHOULD CHARACTERIZE THE BELIEVER

So often inlife we are instructed by the negatives—things that we should not do. God’s word always includes instruction from apositive perspective that tells us what we should do. God never asks more from us than He askedfrom His only son, the Lord Jesus, and proudly promotes Him as the One weshould seek to emulate.

Colossians 3:12-13 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowelsof mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearingone another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any:even as Christ forgave you, so also doye.

Since we haveput off the old man and his deeds of the flesh and have put on the new manthrough faith in Christ, our lives should be characterized by the deeds thatare befitting our new position in Christ. We are to make these deeds a part of our lives in recognition of thetruth that we have been chosen by God to as His beloved children to be holy.

Bowels of mercies – This speaks of showing pity and compassion—not as a show or pretense, but from a heart motivation.

Kindness – The Greek for this word speaks of usefulness, excellence of character, and gentleness. In other words, it is acting toward others with a servant spirit to make things better for them.

Humbleness of mind – The Greek for this word references modesty and humility, which Webster defines as “a sense of one’s own unworthiness through imperfection and sinfulness.” You can’t be a true servant of God without being humble.

Meekness – The Greek defines this as gentleness, meekness, and humility, which seems to overlap the previous two character traits. Webster gives a better understanding: “Mild of temper; not easily provoked or irritated; patient under injuries; not vain, or haughty, or resentful; forbearing; submissive.” I’ve often heard this trait described as strength under control.

Longsuffering – This is another word for patience or a “long-enduring temper.” Again, this seems to overlap the previous trait.

Forbearing one another – The Greek for this is to the point—“put up with, endure.” I think the thing to remember is that because we are all unique individuals; and just as we are to be “forbearing” with others, there are probably times that others need to be “forbearing” with us as well.

Forgiving one another – Last, but certainly not least, Paul tells us that we should be forgiving of one another. This statement isn’t qualified with an “if.” Christ has set the example for us, and we are to forgive unconditionally just as He forgave us unconditionally—all we had to do was ask (sincerely with repentance). Our forgiveness wasn’t limited based on the kind or quantity of our sin; it was free and unconditional in spite of our sin. David Guzik makes a good point:

“If an offending partyis unrepentant, it does no good for the offended one to hold on to their hurtand bitterness. Even if true forgiveness and reconciliation cannot be madebecause there is no recognition of wrong, the offended party still can and mustgive it to the Lord God and make the promise of forgiveness unto God. We can dothis after the pattern of Jesus in Luke 23:34, ’Thensaid Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.’ If we do this, it will be evident by a lackof bitterness and resentment towards the offending party, and a willingness torestore the relationship at the slightest evidence of repentance.”

OLD MAN VS. NEW MAN

Colossians 3:8-9 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice,blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another,seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds….

Since we havebeen given new life in Christ, there should be some noticeable changes in theway we live. Our new life in Christ is spiritual, but we are still housed inbodies of flesh that are cursed with a sin nature. Because of that fact, Paul tells theColossian believers that they must take specific action to quit doing or refrainfrom certain actions.

Anger = violent passion, abhorrence, vengeance; Webster adds: “A strong passion or emotion of displeasure or antagonism, excited by a real or supposed injury or insult to one’s self or others, or by the intent to do such injury.”

Wrath = passion (as if breathing hard):—fierceness; from a root that includes “to immolate (slaughter for any purpose):—kill.” Webster adds: “violent anger, vehement exasperation, rage, fury.”

Malice = badness, depravity, evil, wickedness; Webster adds: “a spirit delighting in harm or misfortune to another; a disposition to injure another.”

Blasphemy = vilification (especially against God), evil speaking; Webster adds: “speaking evil of God; also, the act of claiming the attributes or prerogatives of deity.”

Filthy communication/speaking = vile conversation; Webster adds: “nasty; dirty; polluted; foul; impure; obscene.”

Lying = to utter an untruth or attempt to deceive by falsehood.

All of theseactions are wicked and evil, and their definitions broadened myunderstanding. I was surprised to seethat wrath included “killing.” It’s very disconcerting to note that malice includes “delighting” in harmingsomeone else or “delighting” in their misfortune. I understand the proliferation of evil andwickedness in general, it’s just hard for me to understand how men/women cantake pleasure in such actions against another human being. The whole mentality behind the popularity ofthe “entertainment” displayed at the Roman Colosseum is beyond me. For that matter, much of so called“entertainment” today is filled with violent and malicious actions of mentoward other men.

As newcreations in Christ, we are to reckon ourselves dead to the old man of theflesh and its wicked actions.

Colossians 3:10-11 And have put on the new man,which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Wherethere is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian,Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

We werecreated in the image of God, and through salvation we begin the process ofbeing sanctified—of being restored to the perfection with which we were firstcreated. That process is brought aboutthrough becoming more and more knowledgeable about God and His truth. The Greek for knowledge is a reference to “recognition and fulldiscernment.” In other words, it’s notjust becoming aware of facts; it’s understanding who we are in the image of ourCreator by understanding Who He Is. Paulstates it clearly in his letter to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created inrighteousness and true holiness.

As I readthrough verse 11, I was reminded that men weren’t separated into nations untilafter the flood. Mankind was created infellowship with the Creator. Once wedecided to rebel against the Creator, man became more and more self-servinguntil “every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). So God sent the flood and gave man a newstart. It didn’t take long before aleader emerged to lead the community of men in rebellion against the Lord, soHe decided to step in and create divisions in mankind by giving them differentlanguages that resulted in the different nations.

The truechurch is essentially a picture of what God intended for mankind to beginwith. It’s a fellowship of believerswith the common bond of love for their Lord in which all are on equal footingand there is no respecter of persons. Weare united in Christ; there should be no division in the family of God. Obviously, it’s a sad statement on thespiritual condition of the “church” today that we have become so divided. That is why our testimony doesn’t have theeffect for change that it should in our world today. The Lord was very clear that our love for oneanother is the dominant characteristic that would identify us as His before theworld.

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that yeare my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF GOD’S WRATH?

Continuing in our investigation of Colossians...

Colossians 3:5-7 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, andcovetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God comethon the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when yelived in them.

Paul istelling the Colossian believers that they are to “deaden, subdue” their body offlesh and all its parts regarding the works of the flesh. He then goes on to define these fleshlypractices that provoke God to wrath.

· Fornication= to act the harlot, i.e. (literally) indulge unlawful lust (of either sex), or(figuratively) practice idolatry

· Uncleanness= physical or moral impurity

· Inordinateaffection = excessive passion

· Evilconcupiscence = longing or desire for what is forbidden, harmful, or wicked

· Covetousness= avarice, i.e. (by implication) fraudulency, extortion…greediness

At first Ithought that only covetousness was being connected to idolatry (which is howmost of the translations read), but on further thought, I believe idolatry isassociated with each one of these practices. Each one references using one’s body for things other than that which ispleasing to God; it is an act of yielding to the flesh rather than God. As I looked at the list again, I noticed thatit represents broad categories of wicked actions and wicked desires.

These are thevery sins for which God’s wrath is going to be expended on the earth and itsinhabitants in the “day of the Lord,” the day of God’s wrath. I think it is important to note that God’swrath will be directed at “children of disobedience.” Whose children? Satan’s. Jesus made this clear in His condemnation of the Pharisees.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father yewill do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of hisown: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

I think it isalso important to note that God’s children are promised deliverance from thattime of wrath.

1Thessalonians 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvationby our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall besaved from wrath through him.

Paul is alsomaking a point of the fact that the Colossian believers had participated insome of these very sins in time past. It’s always important to remember our roots. That memory should serve to make uscompassionate and motivate us to share the good news of the gospel with thosewho are bound by such sin. We shouldalways remember that “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

Paul isemphasizing the fact that this is reference to a past way of life, an oldlife. The believer enjoys a new life inChrist with the ability to overcome sin through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:14–20 “For this cause Ibow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…That he would grant you,according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by hisSpirit in the inner man…that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask orthink, according to the power that worketh in us….”

TO BE “IN CHRIST” IS TO BE “IN GOD”

Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Paul is veryspecific in this verse—The believer is to reckon himself dead (to theflesh). We have been born again in thespirit to new life “with” Christ “in” God. This wording stood out to me since Paul uses the expression “in Christ”so often. The Greek for with states “denoting union.” We are united as one with Christ in a fixedposition of rest in God. Paul picturesChrist as the head of one body of believers.

Ephesians 4:15-16 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in allthings, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joinedtogether and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to theeffectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the bodyunto the edifying of itself in love.

We are alsojoined as one through the indwelling of the same Holy Spirit.

1Corinthians 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Though it isimportant to recognize the distinction in Father, Son and Spirit, it is alsoimportant to understand that they are also the same. So, even though Paul is making a point as tothe Father’s provision for us through His Son, it is clear that if we are “inChrist,” we are “in God.”

Paul alsomakes the point that our life is “hid” with Christ. The Greek makes reference to being concealed bycovering and kept secret. We tend tothink of life more from a physical perspective, but the true essence of ourlife is spiritual. When we accept Jesusas Savior, we are given new life that is concealed in His righteousness.

2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath madehim to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousnessof God in him.”

When wereceive our glorified bodies, our spiritual life and physical life will onceagain be manifest in the glory and image of God in which it was originallycreated.

Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is ourlife, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

This is a when statement, not an if statement. Jesus Christ will manifest Himself in all Hisglory to those on planet earth. Whenthat time comes, the body of believers will be with Him. Prophetic side note: We can’t be with Him when He returns to earthunless we have first been taken up to be with Him in heaven. Note that we will appear with Him “inglory”—in our glorified bodies.

“who is ourlife” – I think it is important to emphasize again that it is “in Christ” thatwe have new life.

1Corinthians 15:22 For asin Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

2Corinthians 5:17Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passedaway; behold, all things are become new.

SET YOUR AFFECTIONS ON THINGS ABOVE

In this postwe will be challenged to examine the desires that guide the choices we make inlife.

Colossians 3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which areabove, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not onthings on the earth.

These versesrefer back to the truth presented in chapter 2, verses 11-13. The child of God has died to the flesh andhas been given new life in Christ. Thisis what is pictured in our baptism—death, burial and resurrection. Again we meet that little word “if,” becauseit is only “in Christ” that we are empowered to “seek those things which areabove” through His Spirit. Above is defined as “where Christsitteth on the right hand of God”—heaven. This is a reference to spiritual treasure that will be ours for eternity. This is what Jesus referenced in His Sermonon the Mount.

Matthew 6:19-21 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where mothand rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay upfor yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt,and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is,there will your heart be also.

What arethose treasures? I think Paul answersthis best in is letter to the Corinthians.

1Corinthians 2:9 But asit is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into theheart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Paul iscounseling the Colossians to pursue activities that will accrue to eternal treasureswith Christ rather than pursuing the temporary pleasures of this world. It sounds as if it should be so simple, butit’s not. I find myself more and moreoften questioning the wisdom of investing chunks of time in the things of thisworld. I’m seeking to know how to bestbalance my pursuits regarding time invested in spiritual endeavors and timeinvested in the things associated with my life now on planet earth. Many of these activities are entertwinedregarding family and establishing a spiritual heritage and legacy.

I found thisquote from Augustine in the JFB Commentary: “No one longs for eternal, incorruptible, and immortal life, unless hebe wearied of this temporal, corruptible, and mortal life.”

I think thisstatement gets to the heart of the matter. We should get to the point that our true heart’s desire is centered onour eternal future. It’s at the heart ofPaul’s statements to the Corinthians and the Philippians.

2Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from thebody, and to be present with the Lord.

Philippians 1:21-24 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if Ilive in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose Iwot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to bewith Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is moreneedful for you.

I can’t help but think of somethingJesus said in connection with this truth.

Matthew 10:37 “He that loveth fatheror mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughtermore than me is not worthy of me.”

My whole lifecenters around my family, and these are words that have caused me to examine myheart closely throughout the last decade of my life in particular. Honestly, it has taken me a long time to growinto a faith that rests in God’s love and understands that only in trusting andloving Him more can I best show my love to others—especially my family. That doesn’t mean I don’t struggle from timeto time with the trials of life, but the struggle is much less intense and morereadily given back to the Lord with confidence that He is working what is goodand to His glory.

YOU ARE FREE IN CHRIST

Paul now challengesthe Colossian believers with a question, my translation: “If you have died to the flesh and are newcreations in Christ, why are you being tempted to submit to the doctrines ofmen rather than living in freedom in Christ? It’s worded in the scripture as follows:

Colossians 2:20-22 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of theworld, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touchnot; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after thecommandments and doctrines of men?

Many of thefalse teachings being promoted were full of restrictions in areas that Christhas given us freedom.

Touch not – “attach oneself to”
Taste not – “to eat or experience”
Handle not – “to manipulate, to have to do with

In context,this seems to refer back to the self-denial or self-mortification spoken of inverse 18. The religions of men alwaysend up as expressions of ways that man can reach God through their works;Christianity is dependent upon God reaching down to man through His Son toprovide for him what he can in no way provide for himself. Religion is based on works as represented bythe law; Christianity is based on relationship that is a gift of grace. Paul also addressed this issue in his lettersto the Romans and Galatians.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not underthe law, but under grace.

Romans 7:6 But now we are deliveredfrom the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve innewness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Galatians 2:19-21 For I through the law amdead to the law, that I might live unto God. I like theNLT translation of this verse: “Theserules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, humility, and severebodily discipline. But they have no effect when it comes to conquering aperson’s evil thoughts and desires.”

God’s waysare so beyond our understanding. We likethe feeling of earning our own way and of not being beholden to anyone foranything. Our culture works on theprinciple that you have to pay for what you get. We have a hard time relating to the truththat salvation is a gift of grace from God through faith. Yes, there are strings attached. We have toadmit that we are sinners in need of a Savior. We have to accept Jesus as Lord and trust Him according to the truth ofHis word. It’s a relationship rooted inthe love of God that can only be established by grace through faith.

There are somany in this world today—many who even call themselves Christian—that aredepending on their works to get them to heaven. They think that if the good things they do outweigh the bad on the grandscale, God will accept them into heaven. Some even acknowledge that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, but donot accept His provision as sufficient alone. They are still focused on their works as a necessary part of theirsalvation. Those who embrace these falseteachings are in for a very sad confrontation with the truth.

Ephesians 2:8–9 “For by grace are yesaved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man shouldboast.”

It is onlythrough the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that we can overcome sin. The Holy Spirit is only ours through faith inJesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

1 Corinthians 3:16 “Know ye not thatye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

1John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: becausegreater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

FALSE TEACHERS AND DECEIVING VISIONS

Colossians 2:18 Let no man beguile you of yourreward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into thosethings which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind….

This is a hardverse. The main points of accusationseem to be false humility through self-denial or self-mortification and worshipof angels based on deceiving visions. Itwould seem that there were false teachers in Colosse that were promoting theworship of angels. Scripture is clearthat we are to worship no one but God.

Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no othergod: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get theehence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and himonly shalt thou serve.

To give your worship toanyone or anything else is to reject God as Lord. To allow yourself to be deceived intothinking otherwise is to be deceived and lost. Satan is a wonderfulcounterfeiter. People can be veryconvincing who have allowed themselves to be deceived by visions of Satanicorigin. We are much more prone to givecredence to what we experience over what we must choose to accept byfaith. As the old saying goes, “Seeingis believing.” The problem is that“Seeing can be deceiving.” Example: There are many in this world today beingdeceived by visions of “Mary” calling herself the “Queen of Heaven.” The message is one of concern andencouragement and is deceiving many people. It is another evil spirit that is drawing attention to itself and awayfrom the Savior. The “queen of heaven”is identified in scripture by the prophet Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 7:16-18 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry norprayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets ofJerusalem? The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and thewomen knead their dough, to make cakes to thequeen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

Self-denial andself-mortification is another form of pride and setting oneself apart as moreworthy than others. It is a mentality ofworks salvation as opposed to faith. Thisverse seems to tie directly to the truth Paul wrote in his letter to Timothy.

1Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times someshall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines ofdevils….

Colossians 2:19 And not holding the Head, fromwhich all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knittogether, increaseth with the increase of God.

These falseteachers were not connected to the Head—Christ, the head of the body of believers. They were promoting angels and eventhemselves—not Christ. It is “in Christ”that the body of believers are knit together as a unified whole. I believe that this is accomplishedsupernaturally through the indwelling Holy Spirit. It is only “in Christ” through the ministryof the Spirit that we as believers can be nourished to grow in spiritualdevelopment. God provides for thatgrowth through the Holy Spirit’s gifting in the body whereby we benefit fromministry to each other as we “speak the truth in love.” This truth will always point us to Christ—notself or angels.

Ephesians 4:11-15 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Tillwe all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God,unto a perfect man, unto the measure ofthe stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no morechildren, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, bythe sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait todeceive; But speaking the truth in love,may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ….

RESURRECTION POWER EXPOSES THE SHADOW OF THE LAW

Colossians 2:15 Andhaving spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly,triumphing over them in it.

In context, we know thatthe principalities and powers being referenced by Paul are those that areevil. This was declared more explicitlyin his letter to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle notagainst flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, againstthe rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in highplaces.”

Jesus’ death, burial andresurrection were public events. Hisresurrection openly proved His power and authority over Satan and all his evilforces. Satan had tried in many ways tothwart the coming of the Messiah. I amsure he thought he had finally won when Jesus was crucified and buried. I think he had convinced himself that he hadfinally proven himself the most powerful—but he didn’t count on theresurrection. I wonder if even now hetruly thinks he has a chance at winning, or is he just determined to take asmany with him as he can at his final defeat. He knows the scripture as well as we. He has always had to operate within the parameters that God hasestablished for him—as evidenced by the record of his attacks on Job. His commitment to his losing cause is amazingto me. But isn’t that the patheticmindset of many who reject the truth of God and His word. It’s like they think if they believesomething different hard enough and commit themselves to it with great passion,that it will prove to be true. All thatjust to avoid humbling themselves before God and accepting the gift ofsalvation that He offers in His Son. Theyjust don’t want to be accountable to God. They choose to put all their energy into serving the flesh and enjoyingthe pleasures of sin for a season instead of putting that same energy intoserving God and enjoying His presence and His blessings for eternity.

Colossians 2:16-17 Let noman therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, orof the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come;but the body is of Christ.

Paul is warning theColossian believers that these false teachers would try to provoke them toguilt by judging them for eating what they identify as unclean or for notobserving set holy days. This wouldindicate that they would make use of the Old Testament scriptures to teach thatobedience to the law is what God demands of them, contrary to the freedom inChrist that Paul and the other apostles were teaching. In fact, the law they were espousing wasaccording to the traditions of men and not according to the intent for whichGod established it. The laws and holydays were originally established as a picture the ministry of the Messiah inthe life of the believer. They were butshadows to the reality that would be lived out by Christ in the flesh.

Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the veryimage of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year byyear continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

The whole of the law andthe holy days were dominated by a sacrificial system that required that aninnocent animal without blemish be killed and its blood shed to providetemporary atonement for their sin. Thissystem along with the design of the tabernacle and temple and ministry of the priestsall pointed to the coming Messiah who would willingly lay down His life as theonly acceptable sacrifice before God to provide atonement for mankind once forall for all who would turn to Him infaith and repentance.

Hebrews 10:7-10 Then said I, Lo, I come (in thevolume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when hesaid, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thouwouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, thathe may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ oncefor all.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that hegave his only begotten Son, that whosoeverbelieveth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men tocondemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

1Timothy 2:4-6 Who will have all men tobe saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediatorbetween God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all,to be testified in due time.

This does not mean,however, that all men are automatically saved. Scripture is very clear in declaring that the gift of salvation is onlybestowed upon those that accept it through faith and repentance that areevidenced by obedience.
